about

“Hyper[borea] could be described as being a generation ahead of its time: intense, immediate and inexorable. Qualifies as classic” Dónal Lunny, Planxty, Moving Hearts

Hyper[borea] are among the great unsung heroes of Irish music, with David Bickley ploughing his own rich analogue electro-furrow”. Jim Lockhart, Horslips

CELTRONIQ continues Hyper[borea]’s award-winning journey, this time adding contributions from such luminaries of the traditional music scene as Dónal Lunny, Cormac Breatnach & John Spillane. The new LP branches even further into the Inter-Celtic world, inspired by founder David Bickley’s travels while producing the Irish television series Línte Ceoil Cheiltigh, The Celtic Songlines. During this series David travelled with Dónal Lunny from Skye to Galicia, making an LP with a myriad of traditional stars and innovators along the way, and it was these meetings that forged the friendships and collaborations that are behind CELTRONIQ’s unique sound.
From the Irish, Manx and Cornish vocals right down to the cover photograph by Skilda’s Konan Mevel this is a true pan-Celtic production that also deeply resonates with a modern sense of ambient and electronica.
Backstory
Hyper[borea] was formed in the summer of 1991 while David was in London, visiting his musical comrade Tom Green (The Orb/Another Fine Day). Passing the ‘Control Tower’, a kebab shop near Tom’s Brixton studio, he was stopped in his tracks by an unknown, phenomenal sound honking out of a broken bass bin — hurrying on he sought intelligence!
Tom played David some new sounds from the area, skittering breakbeats and deep dancehall rolling bass. As a Film Artist with a myriad of musical influences already informing his audio- visual style, the mood and textures introduced by these new beats were a new level of excitement and marked not only a personal shift of influence, in terms of his work, but also a physical one, that saw a move from England and across the Irish sea...
David moved to Ireland, taking on a new cultural journey. Upon hearing and listening to Irish traditional and folk music, he realised that these new rhythms from Brixton were a seamless musical ally to the rhythmic qualities inherent not only in Irish music but also the Irish language.

“The sound of Hyper[Borea] can most aptly be
described, if at all, as an ethereal odyssey into a world of electronic ambience and Celtic mysticism. The group’s fusion of pulsating beats with traditional Irish harmonies makes a supremely diverse musical venture”. Patrick Hedland, Hotpress.
